A Crosstown Rivalry

Baseball is America’s pastime, offering fun for both players and spectators. The history of the Cubs and White Sox is also a history of Chicago, representing the Windy City’s past. That’s why we’ve put together a post about two of the most iconic teams in the country.

The Chicago Cubs are one of the oldest teams around, according to the MLB, first starting in 1870 as part of the National Association. As a charter member of the National League, the Cubs are synonymous with Chicago history. This team was in the championship for the following years: 1906, 1907, 1908, 1910, 1918, 1929, 1932, 1935, 1938, and 1945.  With two wins, the Cubs are in the top 10 teams for all-time championship appearances.

The Chicago White Sox are a little younger than the Cubs, first playing in 1901. This American League team has one of the most celebrated histories in the Major League, with a truly unique past. Starting as the Sioux City Cornhuskers in the minor leagues, the White Sox (formerly “White Stockings”) had some of the most famous players, including Shoeless Joe Jackson and Lefty Williams. From 1918 to 1920 there were rumors of illegal gambling, and several players were banned from the sport for life, a period referred to as the Black Sox Scandal.

The White Sox appeared in the championship in 1906, 1917, 1919, 1959, and 2005. Chicago baseball fans will recognize that in 1906 the White Sox and Cubs saw each other at the championship, one of the only instances of interleague play for nearly a century. Now, the Crosstown Classic is an exciting series of games that showcases two of the greatest teams in the league.
