Mitsubishi has been enjoying a new level of success thanks to the popularity of the Outlander family of crossovers. In the U.S., the Outlander Sport continues to be the best-selling Mitsubishi model in the United States, but over in Europe, an unexpected contender has taken the number-one spot – the 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. The plug-in hybrid variant of the Outlander name has become a top pick for European drivers.
Since its 2013 debut in Japan, the Outlander PHEV has reached cumulative sales of 200,000 units sold around the world, a new record for members of the plug-in hybrid segment. Europe is responsible for over 130,000 of those sales over the course of the four years it has been available to the European market. Its efficient engine, innovative hybrid powertrain, and crossover versatility make it an appealing pick for buyers who don’t want to compromise space or capability for a fuel-efficient vehicle.
Will the U.S. catch up to Europe? The American Outlander PHEV is a far cry from being the country’s best-selling Mitsubishi model, but it also debuted late stateside, coming to the American market several years later than other global markets. Hybrids and EVs are also more popular in Europe than here. However, increasing interest in the green car market could spell even more future success for the Outlander PHEV.
