Over the course of its production, the Mitsubishi Eclipse was one of the most popular sport coupes in the industry. With its sleek styling, powerful engine options, and an affordable price tag, the Eclipse was perfect for the American market. While it is no longer sold by the Japanese carmaker, who is focusing more on producing crossovers and SUV models, the Mitsubishi Eclipse is still worthy of remembering. Here is an overview of each Eclipse generation and what makes each model year so special.
1990-1994 Mitsubishi Eclipse
When the Eclipse first debuted back in the 1990 model year, it was part of a joint venture between Mitsubishi and Chrysler called Diamond Star Motors. It quickly became one of the best affordable sport coupes available with its turbocharged engines and pop-up headlights. The high-end trim even came with an available four-wheel-drive option, which made it especially appealing.
1995-1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse
The second-generation Mitsubishi Eclipse took the previous generation’s popularity and built upon it, coming back with a sleeker, more elongated style. This more athletic body style was a hit, as was the newly diversified trim lineup, which offered consumers more options than ever before.
2000-2005 Mitsubishi Eclipse
For the third generation, Mitsubishi decided to give the Eclipse an overhaul. The 2000 model was released as a completely new car based on the Mitsubishi Galant platform. It came with the choice of four gasoline-powered engines and the all-wheel-drive option was dropped from the available features.
2005-2009 Mitsubishi Eclipse
Based on the popularity of the second-generation’s sporty style, Mitsubishi decided to make the fourth-generation Eclipse even more athletic. It gave the sports coupe a hatchback body style and only two engine options to choose from—a 2.4-liter that put out 162 horsepower and a 3.8-liter V6 that generates 263 hp. With three trim levels, this model gave consumers better standard equipment, which included air conditioning, power windows, and a CD player.
2009-2012 Mitsubishi Eclipse
The last and final generation of the Mitsubishi Eclipse started with an October 2009 facelift. This update gave the GT trim a larger rear spoiler, HID headlamps, and Active Stability Control. It also gave the Eclipse a new GST Sport trim level, which offered sportier styling, too.
