About eight years ago, car enthusiast Matt De Mangos of California imported a strange vehicle from across the Pacific – Strange not only in the U.S.A, but in its native homeland of Japan.
The Mitsubishi Colt Galant GTO is a rare Japanese GTO no matter what part of the world it’s in. It was Japan’s response in the early 1970s to the wild popularity of Italian racers and American muscle, but, unfortunately for Mitsubishi and fortunately for future lovers of unique vehicles, the Colt Galant GTO never exploded the way it was meant to.
De Mangos’ Colt Galant GTO is specifically a GSR, meaning Grand Sport Racer. This extra specification makes it an even sweeter grab for the West Coast collector.
GTOs originated in Italy in the auto-magic factories of Ferrari. They spread to the States when Pontiac introduced its answer to Ferrari, the legendary Pontiac GTO, in 1964.
So, what do you think of this rare Japanese GTO? Did you ever expect to hear those words together in that order? But we’re not complaining. Looks like Mitsubishi did a real nice job honoring the Italian/American GTO tradition with its Colt Galant.
Extra kudos to De Mangos for his expert restoration.
